What the Trade Says About Our Turf
What Sets Experienced Commercial Turf Producers Apart
Turf production is farming first. The grass has to be grown, fed, mown and allowed to knit into a strong mat before a single roll can be cut, and that takes patience as much as machinery. Associated Turf has produced natural turf on the Cornwallis Flats at Windsor for more than 45 years, where deep alluvial river soil grows dense turf with strong roots.
For project buyers, the difference between commercial turf producers and resellers shows up in consistency. Because we control production from the paddock up, we know which areas are ready to harvest, which varieties will be available in the coming months and how to rotate paddocks so large orders can be met without cutting immature grass.
In short: Associated Turf produces buffalo, Kikuyu and couch on its own Windsor farm for councils, schools, builders and landscapers in the Hawkesbury. Expect about $9 to $18 per m², driven by variety, area, delivery distance and supply-only versus supply-and-lay. We usually reply to quote requests within one business day.
- Direct from the paddock to your site
- Clear information on availability and timing
- Dense turf grown on rich Hawkesbury soils
- Trusted by landscapers, builders and councils
Your Local Turf Production Team for Hobartville and Yarramundi
Hobartville and Yarramundi are only a short drive apart, yet the turf they need can be very different. Hobartville is an established suburb where schools, parks and older homes have mature trees, worn play areas and lawns that have been patched many times over. Yarramundi sits out on the river flats and rural fringe, where open acreage, sandy patches and flood-affected ground ask for tough, fast-establishing grass. Being close to both means turf cut to order spends very little time on the road.
We approach every commercial order as a production question first. Before quoting, we look at which paddocks will be ready at the time you need them, how much area you require and whether the variety you want suits the site. That lets us give realistic harvest dates rather than hopeful ones, plus options for staged supply and laying by our own team. Find out more about our commercial turf farm and the projects we supply.
- Realistic harvest dates based on paddock readiness
- Varieties suited to shade, wear or open ground
- Short trip from paddock to nearby sites

Renewing Worn School and Park Turf in Hobartville
Many of Hobartville’s school grounds, sporting areas and parks have been in use for decades, and the turf shows it. Goal mouths, cricket run-ups and paths between buildings wear down to bare soil, while the ground underneath becomes compacted after years of foot traffic. Simply laying new rolls over a hard, uneven base rarely lasts, because roots can’t push into the soil.
Mature trees are the second issue. Large established trees cast heavy shade over sections of school yards and reserves, and they compete with turf for water. Full-sun grasses that thrive on an open field often thin out under a canopy within a season or two.
We help grounds managers plan replacement in sections, so areas can be closed, prepared and turfed without shutting down a whole site. Base preparation comes first, with compacted soil loosened and levelled before laying. Kikuyu and Greenlees Park Couch suit high-wear open areas, while Shademaster, being up to 85% shade tolerant, suits ground beneath trees.
- Section-by-section replacement planning
- Hard-wearing turf for play and sports areas
- Shade-tolerant buffalo under mature trees
How Much Do Commercial Turf Producers Charge?
Pricing from commercial turf producers reflects what it costs to grow each variety. Most farm-direct turf from our paddocks is about $9 to $18 per square metre. Kikuyu and couch are at the lower end, while soft leaf buffalo sits at the top. Bigger areas usually attract a lower rate per square metre, and laying or installation is quoted on top depending on area, site preparation and access.
For a figure based on your area and site, get in touch with our farm team.
- Variety: buffalo costs more to produce than Kikuyu or couch
- Area: larger orders lower the rate per square metre
- Delivery distance: kilometres travelled from our Windsor farm
- Supply only or supply and lay: installation is priced on top
From Paddock to Pallet: How Commercial Turf Is Produced
Every roll of turf starts as a paddock of living grass, and production runs on a long cycle. After a harvest, a paddock typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow before it can be cut again, so producers have to plan well ahead to meet large orders.
Our farm sits on the Cornwallis Flats beside the Hawkesbury River, where alluvial soil grows dense turf with strong roots. At harvest, each roll is cut with a thin layer of soil and roots, which helps it start rooting within about two weeks in warm weather.
Once cut, turf can’t feed itself properly, so we harvest to order and recommend laying on the day it arrives. For larger open sites we also produce Maxi Turf in 1.2 metre by 12 metre rolls laid by machine.
How Associated Turf Plans Production for Your Job
Commercial supply starts in the paddock long before the truck arrives. These four steps show how we match production to your project timeline.
- Assess your needs. We confirm area, variety and timing, and flag any production limits early.
- Allocate paddocks. Ready ground is set aside for your order, with staging for longer builds.
- Harvest fresh. Each delivery is cut at Windsor close to dispatch so it arrives moist and green.
- Deliver and support. Pallets arrive Monday to Saturday, with laying by our team if required and watering advice.
Flood-Prone Flats and Sandy Ground in Yarramundi
Yarramundi sits where river country meets the rural fringe, and that brings conditions that test new turf. Low-lying ground close to the river can be flooded or waterlogged after big rain events, sometimes leaving silt over existing grass and soft ground that machinery can’t cross for days. Projects here need flexibility around delivery and laying dates.
Soil varies widely as well. Some river ground is light and sandy, draining fast and drying out quickly in summer, which means new turf can struggle unless it is watered regularly through its first few weeks. Open blocks also face full sun and frosty winter mornings, when couch and Kikuyu can go straw-coloured until spring.
As producers working on similar river flats ourselves, we understand these swings. We keep clients informed when wet weather affects harvest or access, advise on improving light soils with a quality underlay, and suggest Kikuyu for fast recovery or soft leaf buffalo where winter colour matters more.
- Flexible dates around flooding and wet ground
- Underlay advice for light, sandy soils
- Varieties chosen for frost and full sun

Frequently Asked Questions About Commercial Turf Production in the Hawkesbury
Curious about how turf is produced and supplied for commercial jobs? These answers explain how our Windsor farm works.
Our turf specialists are happy to help.
Why buy from commercial turf producers rather than a reseller?
Commercial turf producers grow the grass themselves, so they know exactly what is ready to harvest and when. At Associated Turf, everything comes from our own Windsor paddocks, cut to order and never stockpiled. You get fresher turf, realistic harvest dates and advice from the people who grew it.
How long does it take to produce a crop of turf?
After harvest, a paddock typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow into a dense mat that can be cut again. The time depends on the variety and the season. That long cycle is why we plan ahead for larger commercial orders.
Can you produce enough turf for a large project?
We supply large projects including ovals, parks, schools and sporting grounds. Telling us early helps us allocate ready paddocks and plan staged harvests across your build. If one area is not ready in time, we will say so upfront and work out a realistic schedule with you.
Does the soil turf is grown in make a difference?
Yes. Our farm is on the Cornwallis Flats beside the Hawkesbury River, where rich alluvial soil grows dense turf with strong roots. Well-grown turf handles harvesting and transport better, and it usually starts rooting within about two weeks of laying in warm weather.
What happens to production when the river floods?
Like other commercial turf producers on the Hawkesbury flats, we can't harvest cleanly when paddocks are waterlogged or under water. If flooding or heavy rain affects your order, we contact you early and agree on a new harvest date rather than sending turf that is below standard.
Which turf varieties do you produce?
We produce Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo, Kikuyu, Greenlees Park Couch and Wintergreen Couch. Wintergreen is a dense fine-leaf couch proven on stadiums and golf courses, while Shademaster is up to 85% shade tolerant for heavily shaded areas.
Do commercial turf producers also lay turf?
Some do, and we offer both supply only and supply and lay. Our own team installs turf, and Maxi Turf rolls are laid by machine for large areas with easy access. Laying is quoted on top of the turf, based on area, preparation and access.
