Camden and the Macarthur region are among the hottest parts of Sydney in summer, and many homes sit on new estates where builders have stripped or compacted the topsoil. That combination is hard on new turf. Rolls laid on hard clay in high heat can scorch within days because the roots cannot push into the ground to find water.

Travel time is the other factor. Macarthur is a longer run from our Windsor farm than many suburbs, so turf that has been harvested early and left waiting can arrive stressed before it is even unrolled.

We deal with both issues. Your couch is cut for your delivery day and loaded for the run south, so it arrives fresh. Before it arrives, we recommend loosening the compacted base, adding underlay soil and levelling the yard. Lay every roll on the day it lands and water it deeply, then keep it moist for the first few weeks so the roots reach into the cooler soil below.

Our farm sits on Cornwallis Road, Windsor, on the Cornwallis Flats beside the Hawkesbury River. The rich alluvial river soil grows dense turf with strong roots, which helps each roll hold together during harvest, loading and transport.

We never stockpile. A harvested paddock typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow, so we plan cutting carefully and take only what has been ordered. Fresh turf typically weighs around 15 to 25 kg per square metre, depending on moisture, which is why larger orders arrive on pallets.

Once laid, fresh couch usually starts rooting within about two weeks in warm weather. In frosty winters it can go dormant and turn straw-coloured, before greening up again in spring.

Around Blacktown and Mount Druitt, many homes sit on standard suburban blocks with narrow side paths, carports and busy streets. Getting pallets of turf from the kerb to the backyard can be the hardest part of the job, especially when every roll needs to be laid on the same hot day.

Soil is the second challenge. Much of this part of Sydney has heavy clay that sets hard in dry weather and turns sticky after rain. Turf laid on untreated clay struggles to root and can stay patchy for months.
