Grose Vale and Windsor sit only a short drive apart, yet their backyards can be worlds away. Up on the Grose Vale ridges, many homes sit on sloping acreage edged by bushland, while Windsor has everything from heritage cottages with tired old lawns to new family homes on the flats. In both, a lawn has to stand up to everyday family life: bikes, backyard cricket, trampolines, pets and the regular walk to the clothesline.

Many Grose Vale homes are built on the slopes rising toward the foothills, and a sloping yard is harder on a new lawn than a flat one. Water runs off before it soaks in, topsoil can wash downhill in heavy rain, and freshly laid rolls on a steep section can dry out at the top while staying soggy at the bottom.

Bushland adds a second challenge. Tall eucalypts along boundaries block the morning or afternoon sun, and their roots compete with grass for moisture. Sun-hungry varieties tend to thin out in these spots, leaving bare patches that quickly fill with weeds.

Good preparation matters too, so loosen the base, add underlay soil and level it as much as the slope allows before laying.

Fresh lawn grass is heavier than most people expect. A square metre of turf typically weighs around 15 to 25 kg depending on moisture, so a trailer load adds up quickly if you plan to collect it yourself. Our farm pick-up hours are Monday to Friday 8am to 4.30pm and Saturday 7am to 12pm.

Once it arrives, your lawn should go down the same day, especially in hot weather, because rolled turf cannot feed itself properly. In warm conditions fresh turf usually starts rooting within about two weeks, as long as it gets regular watering for the first few weeks. Ground preparation makes the biggest difference, so loosen compacted soil, spread underlay soil and level the area before your delivery day.

Windsor’s position on the Hawkesbury flats means cold air pools in winter, and frosty mornings are common through the coldest months. Couch and Kikuyu go dormant and turn straw-coloured in these conditions, which some families accept and others find disappointing. Soft leaf buffalo holds its colour better, so it is often the preferred choice for front lawns that people want looking green all year.

Many older Windsor homes also have lawns that have simply worn out. Decades of foot traffic compact the soil, weeds take over the thin spots, and patchy repairs with mismatched grass leave the yard looking uneven. In these cases it is usually better to strip the old lawn, loosen and level the base, and start again with a single variety.
