Lawns That Get Noticed
Why Choose a Natural Grass Supplier for Your Lawn
A natural lawn is a living plant, not a product off a shelf. Each roll we harvest carries a thin layer of soil and a mat of roots that has been growing in our paddocks for many months, and once it is laid on prepared ground those roots reach down and the lawn knits together. That is what makes natural turf feel soft underfoot, recover from wear and change with the seasons.
Associated Turf has been growing natural grass on the Cornwallis Flats at Windsor for more than 45 years. We sell only what we grow ourselves, cut to order, so the turf you receive is still alive and full of moisture.
In short: Associated Turf is a natural grass supplier at Windsor growing six living turf varieties for Hawkesbury homes and projects. Most farm-direct turf costs about $9 to $18 per square metre, depending on variety, area, delivery distance and laying. We usually reply to quote requests within one business day.
- Honest recommendations from growers
- Grass matched to your sun, use and upkeep
- Every variety grown on our own farm
- Harvested to order for peak freshness
Natural Grass for Kurmond and South Windsor Homes
Kurmond and South Windsor show how varied Hawkesbury lawns can be. Out at Kurmond, semi-rural properties often have large, open lawns around the house and sheds, with long sunny days and plenty of ground to cover. South Windsor is more suburban, with family homes on standard blocks where the lawn is the main outdoor space and has to look good at the front and work hard at the back. In both, a living lawn keeps the ground covered, holds the soil together and gives the family somewhere comfortable to spend time outdoors.
We help you pick a natural grass that suits the size, sun and use of your property, then grow and cut it on our Windsor farm. Visit our main grass supplier page to compare the six varieties we grow, or tell us about your yard and we will narrow it down. Every roll is harvested to order and can be delivered, collected or laid by our own team.
- Living turf grown in Hawkesbury river soil
- Varieties for open acreage and suburban yards
- Harvested to order, never stockpiled
What Your Natural Grass Order Can Include
Natural grass comes in more forms than most people realise, from broad soft leaf buffalo to fine couch and fast-growing Kikuyu. Here is what you can include when you order living turf direct from our farm, along with the support that helps it settle in.
- Soft leaf buffalo: Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster for sun or shade
- Kikuyu: fast-repairing natural grass for open, sunny ground
- Fine-leaf couch: Greenlees Park and Wintergreen for a dense, even surface
- Fresh harvest: rolls cut with soil and roots attached on your chosen day
- Maxi Turf rolls: 1.2 m by 12 m for large areas with machine access
- Establishment tips: preparation and watering advice from our growers
Covering Large, Sun-Exposed Lawns Around Kurmond
Kurmond properties often have far more lawn than a suburban block, and much of it sits in full sun with little shelter from hot westerly afternoons. That scale changes the job. Laying hundreds of square metres in one go means the last rolls must not sit waiting while the first are watered, and keeping a big new lawn moist through its first few weeks takes planning, especially where a property relies on rainwater tanks.
Open ground is also where hardy grasses shine. Kikuyu is a full-sun grass that repairs quickly, and it suits paddock-style lawns that see ride-on mowers, vehicles and animals. Greenlees Park Couch is another strong choice for hard-wearing sunny areas that need a finer finish near the house.
For large, accessible lawns we can also lay Maxi Turf, which comes in rolls 1.2 m wide by 12 m long and is laid by machine. Fewer joins mean the lawn establishes faster, and our team lays it in a single, organised run.
- Full-sun varieties suited to open acreage
- Staged deliveries so rolls never sit waiting
- Maxi Turf laying where machines can reach
What Does Natural Grass Cost in the Hawkesbury?
Because we grow every roll ourselves, natural grass from our farm is priced without a reseller’s margin. For budgeting, allow about $9 to $18 per square metre for most of our farm-direct turf. Kikuyu and couch sit toward the lower end, while soft leaf buffalo is at the top. Large lawns such as those common around Kurmond usually attract a lower rate per square metre. If you want our team to lay it, installation is quoted on top, based on the area, site preparation and access.
For an exact figure, contact us for a natural grass quote and include your measurements.
- Variety: soft leaf buffalo is priced above Kikuyu and couch
- Area: larger lawns attract a lower rate per m²
- Distance: delivery from Windsor to your property
- Installation: laying, site preparation and access are quoted on top
From Paddock to Roll: The Life of Natural Turf
Natural turf takes far longer to grow than it does to lay. After each harvest, a paddock typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow into a dense mat that can be cut again, so a farm has to plan its supply well ahead. Our paddocks sit on the Cornwallis Flats, where rich alluvial river soil helps the grass build strong roots.
When we harvest, each roll is cut with a thin layer of that soil attached. The grass is still alive but cannot feed itself properly while rolled, which is why it should be laid on the day it arrives. On prepared ground, fresh turf usually starts rooting within about two weeks in warm weather. Through winter, couch and Kikuyu may go dormant and straw-coloured, while soft leaf buffalo holds its colour better.
How We Grow, Cut and Deliver Your Natural Grass
Keeping turf alive from paddock to yard is the heart of what we do. Our team follows four steps on every natural grass order so the roots stay moist and the grass is ready to establish.
- Pick the right grass. We match a living variety to your sun, shade, soil and how much wear the lawn will get.
- Schedule the harvest. Once your quote is confirmed, we book a cut date that lines up with your laying day.
- Cut with soil and roots. Your rolls are harvested fresh at Windsor and loaded on pallets for bigger jobs.
- Lay and water. We deliver, or our own team lays the turf, then you water regularly for the first few weeks.
Heavy Ground and Wet Spells in South Windsor
Parts of South Windsor sit low on the Hawkesbury floodplain, and after heavy rain some yards stay wet for days. Natural grass needs air around its roots as well as water, so a lawn sitting in soggy ground can thin out and leave muddy patches, particularly along fence lines and in shaded corners where the soil dries slowly.
Many blocks also have heavy clay beneath a shallow layer of topsoil. Over years of use that clay compacts, water pools on the surface instead of soaking in, and new turf struggles to send roots down. Builders’ machinery on newer homes can make the problem worse.
Before laying, we recommend loosening the compacted base, adding a quality underlay soil and levelling so water drains away instead of collecting in hollows. Where wet ground also means less sun, Sir Walter or Matilda, which thrive with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun, are usually safer choices than Kikuyu.

- Levelling tips to stop water pooling
- Variety suggestions for damp, shaded corners

Frequently Asked Questions About Natural Grass Supply in the Hawkesbury
Thinking of laying a living lawn? Here are straight answers to the questions Kurmond and South Windsor customers ask most.
Our turf specialists are happy to help.
What does a natural grass supplier actually sell?
A natural grass supplier sells living turf: rolls of grass cut with their roots and a thin layer of soil attached. Associated Turf grows six natural varieties on its Windsor farm, harvests them to order and delivers them ready to lay, so the lawn can start rooting soon after it goes down.
How long does natural grass take to settle in?
In warm weather, fresh turf usually starts rooting within about two weeks, provided the ground was prepared properly and the turf is watered regularly. Establishment is slower in the cooler months. Keep foot traffic light while the roots take hold so the lawn can knit together evenly.
Does natural grass turn brown in winter?
Some varieties do. Couch and Kikuyu can go dormant and straw-coloured in frosty winters, then recover as temperatures rise. Soft leaf buffalo such as Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster holds its colour better. If a green winter lawn matters to you, mention it when you ask for a quote.
How much natural turf can I carry on a trailer?
That depends on your trailer's rated capacity. Fresh turf typically weighs around 15 to 25 kg per square metre, depending on moisture, so even a modest area is heavy. Check the limit before collecting, and if the area is large, our Monday to Saturday delivery on pallets is usually easier.
Why does natural turf need to be laid on the day it arrives?
Once rolled, turf cannot feed itself properly, and in hot weather it can heat up and yellow quickly. Laying it the same day keeps the roots in contact with soil and moisture. That is why, as a natural grass supplier, we cut every order to suit your laying day rather than stockpiling rolls.
Can you lay natural grass on a large Kurmond property?
Yes. Our own team lays turf, and for big open areas with easy machine access we can install Maxi Turf rolls measuring 1.2 m by 12 m. They are laid by machine, so there are fewer joins and the lawn establishes faster. Installation is quoted on area, preparation and access.
How do I get a price from your natural grass supplier team?
Send us your measurements, suburb and preferred variety through the quote form, or call 1800 044 006. We usually reply to quote requests within one business day with pricing for supply only or supply and lay, then book a harvest date to suit you.
