What to Look for in a Real Lawn Grass Supplier
Plenty of businesses sell turf, but far fewer actually grow it. When a lawn passes through a reseller’s yard, it can sit on a pallet for a day or more before reaching you, and the person selling it may never have seen the paddock it came from. A real grower can tell you which field your rolls were cut from and how that variety behaves through a Hawkesbury summer and winter.
Associated Turf has grown real lawn grass on the Cornwallis Flats at Windsor for more than 45 years. We sell nothing we have not grown, and every order is cut to suit your delivery or pick-up day.
In short: Associated Turf is a real turf grower at Windsor supplying farm-cut lawn grass to homes, builders and landscapers around Richmond, Mulgrave and the Hawkesbury. Most turf costs about $9 to $18 per square metre depending on variety, area, delivery distance and laying. We usually reply to quote requests within one business day.
- Honest recommendations from growers
- Grass matched to your sun, use and upkeep
- Every variety grown on our own farm
- Harvested to order for peak freshness
Your Local Real Lawn Grass Team in Mulgrave and Richmond
Mulgrave and Richmond sit either side of our farm, and the lawns we supply there are as varied as the suburbs. Mulgrave’s growth brings a steady stream of builders, developers and landscapers who need reliable turf to finish a job on time. Richmond has established family streets, larger older blocks and plenty of homeowners replacing tired lawns. Both groups want the same thing: real grass that arrives fresh, roots quickly and looks exactly like the variety they were promised. Neither wants to discover later that the turf was trucked in from somewhere else and left sitting in a yard.
We deliver on that by growing and harvesting everything ourselves. You can see the varieties we grow on our grass supplier page, ask exactly when your paddock will be cut, and arrange delivery or collection to suit your laying day. Trade customers can ask about project pricing and staged harvests for longer builds, while homeowners get the same farm-cut turf and plain advice from the growers.
- Turf traced back to our own Windsor paddocks
- Trade pricing for builders and landscapers
- Home orders cut to the same standard
What Your Real Lawn Grass Supply Can Include
Whether you are finishing a new home in Mulgrave or replacing a worn lawn in Richmond, you can tailor your order around the job. Every option below comes straight from our farm team, with no third party involved at any stage.
- Farm-grown varieties: three soft leaf buffalos, Kikuyu and two fine-leaf couches
- Harvest-day booking: your paddock cut for the day you lay
- Trade and project pricing: for builders, landscapers and developers
- Staged harvests: supply spread across multi-month builds
- Supply and lay: our own team prepares and installs the lawn
- Delivery Monday to Saturday: on pallets for bigger jobs, or farm pick-up
Finishing New Builds and Estates in Mulgrave
Much of the lawn we send to Mulgrave goes onto new homes and commercial sites, and construction leaves its mark on the ground. Heavy machinery compacts the soil, topsoil is often stripped or buried under fill, and leftover rubble sits just below the surface. Real grass laid over that base struggles to root and often browns off within its first summer.
Timing is the other pressure. Builders want the lawn down for handover, but turf cannot wait on a pallet while the last trades finish up. If the site is not ready on harvest day, rolls dry out and the lawn starts at a disadvantage.
We work with builders and landscapers to plan around both problems. We recommend loosening the base, adding underlay soil and levelling before turf goes down, then cut your order for the confirmed laying day. On longer projects we can stage harvests across several months so each stage receives fresh-cut rolls rather than leftovers.
- Base preparation advice for compacted fill
- Harvest dates locked to handover schedules
- Staged supply for multi-stage projects
How Much Does Real Lawn Grass Cost Around Richmond?
Buying real turf straight from the grower means you pay for grass, not for extra handling. Most farm-direct turf from our paddocks costs about $9 to $18 per square metre. Where you land depends mostly on variety: Kikuyu and couch are lower, soft leaf buffalo higher. Builders and landscapers ordering larger areas usually receive a lower rate per square metre, and trade or project pricing is available. Laying is quoted on top based on the area, site preparation and access.
To see the numbers for your site, send us your project details and we will prepare a quote.
- Variety: buffalo costs more than Kikuyu or couch
- Order size: larger areas attract a lower rate per m²
- Travel: delivery distance from our Windsor farm
- Scope: supply only versus supply and lay, plus access and preparation
How to Tell You Are Getting Real, Fresh-Cut Turf
Fresh-cut turf is easy to recognise once you know what to check. The rolls should feel cool and moist, with a firm layer of soil holding the roots together, and the leaf should be green rather than yellowing in the centre of the roll. A square metre typically weighs around 15 to 25 kg depending on moisture, so dry, unusually light rolls are a warning sign.
Turf left sitting in warm weather quickly loses condition, which is why we harvest to order and never keep stock waiting on pallets. Your turf should be laid the same day it arrives, particularly in hot weather. If the ground is prepared and the lawn is watered regularly, fresh turf usually starts rooting within about two weeks in warm conditions.
How Associated Turf Supplies Real Lawn Grass
Being the grower lets us control every stage between the paddock and your site. Each real lawn grass order, from a single home to a builder’s estate, moves through the same four steps.
- Confirm the brief. We note the area, variety, address and whether you need supply only or supply and lay.
- Select the paddock. We choose a mature crop of your variety that is ready to harvest on your date.
- Harvest and load. Rolls are cut fresh at Windsor and stacked on pallets for bigger jobs or prepared for pick-up.
- Deliver and lay. We deliver Monday to Saturday, or our own team installs the lawn on site the same day.
Laying Real Grass Through a Richmond Summer
Richmond summers can be fierce, and heat is the biggest single risk for any new lawn laid there. Turf that is delayed on a hot afternoon starts to stress before it is even unrolled, and freshly laid grass on bare, dry soil can scorch at the edges within days if watering falls behind. Open blocks with little shade feel the full force of the afternoon sun.
Soils across Richmond also vary from street to street. Some yards have good loam, while others sit on clay that sets hard in dry weather and sheds water instead of absorbing it. Roots that cannot get through that crust stay shallow, and the lawn suffers every time a hot spell arrives.
In summer we suggest collecting or receiving your turf as early in the day as you can so it goes down before the worst of the heat, moistening the prepared soil beforehand and watering regularly for the first few weeks. For full-sun yards, Kikuyu is a hardy choice that repairs itself quickly.
- Delivery timing that avoids the afternoon heat
- Soil preparation tips for hard, dry clay

Frequently Asked Questions About Real Lawn Grass Supply in Richmond and Mulgrave
Buying turf for a home or a building project? These answers explain how to check you are getting real, fresh-cut grass from the grower.
Our turf specialists are happy to help.
How do I know I am buying from a real lawn grass supplier?
Ask where the turf is grown and when it will be cut. A real lawn grass supplier can name its farm and harvest your order to suit your laying day. Associated Turf grows every roll on Cornwallis Road, Windsor, and sells nothing from other growers, so the answer is always our own paddocks.
What should fresh turf look like when it arrives?
It should be green, cool and moist, with a firm layer of soil and roots holding each roll together. Yellowing in the middle of a roll or light, dry soil usually means the turf was cut too long ago. Lay it on the day it arrives for the best start.
Do you supply builders and landscapers in Mulgrave?
Yes. Builders, developers and landscapers order regularly from our farm. We offer trade and project pricing, can stage harvests across multi-month builds, and deliver Monday to Saturday on pallets for bigger jobs. Tell us your handover dates and we will plan harvests around them.
Why doesn't a real lawn grass supplier keep turf in stock?
Because rolled turf is alive and cannot feed itself properly once it is cut. Keeping it stacked for days lowers its quality, especially in warm weather. As a real lawn grass supplier, we cut to order instead, so your rolls leave the paddock as close as possible to delivery or collection.
Which real grass suits a hot, sunny Richmond yard?
Kikuyu is a hardy full-sun grass that repairs quickly, and Greenlees Park Couch is a premium hard-wearing option. If the yard has some shade or you want better winter colour, Matilda or Sir Walter Soft Leaf Buffalo thrive with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun.
How long does a harvested paddock take to regrow?
A harvested paddock typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow before it can be cut again, depending on the variety and the season. That is why larger projects benefit from booking early, so we can reserve mature turf for each stage of your job.
How quickly will I get a quote?
We usually reply to quote requests within one business day. Send your measurements and address through our quote form or call 1800 044 006, and let us know whether you need supply only or supply and lay so we can price the whole job.
