What Customers Say About Our Farm-Fresh Turf
Why Buying from Our Turf Farm Makes a Difference
Associated Turf is one of the long-established turf farms on the Cornwallis Flats at Windsor, where the Hawkesbury River has built up deep, fertile alluvial soil over thousands of years. We have been growing and supplying natural turf for more than 45 years, and every roll we sell comes from our own paddocks rather than a reseller’s yard. That gives us full control over how the grass is fed, mown and harvested, so we can stand behind every order that leaves the farm.
Dealing directly with turf farms means fresher grass, honest advice from people who know each variety from the ground up, and farm-direct pricing whether you need turf for a small backyard or a full sporting field. You also get a straight answer about what is ready to harvest this week, not a guess from someone reading a stock list.
In short: Associated Turf is a turf farm on Cornwallis Road, Windsor, growing buffalo, Kikuyu and couch for homes, landscapers and councils across the Hawkesbury and beyond. Price depends mainly on variety, area and delivery distance. We cut to order, deliver Monday to Saturday and usually reply to quote requests within one business day.
- Grown and harvested on our own Windsor farm
- No resellers or stockpiled pallets in between
- Advice from growers who know every variety
- Supply for homes, landscapers, builders and councils
Your Local Turf Farm for Windsor and Hawkesbury Homes
Homes around Windsor, Richmond and the wider Hawkesbury deal with hot summers, frosty winter mornings on the river flats and soils that range from sandy loam to heavy clay. A lawn that thrives in one street can struggle in the next, so buying from a local turf farm that grows in the same conditions gives your new grass a head start. Turf raised just down the road is already used to the local climate and spends far less time in transit before it goes down.
At Associated Turf, every home order starts with a quick chat about your sun, shade, pets and how the lawn will be used, and we then recommend a variety from our paddocks to match. We help you measure the area, cut your turf as close as possible to delivery or collection, and share simple preparation and watering advice so it roots quickly. How Hawkesbury Floods and Frosts Shape Turf Farm Supply
The fertile Cornwallis Flats exist because the Hawkesbury River floods, and that same river shapes how every turf farm in the district operates. The major floods of 2021 and 2022 showed how quickly paddocks can go under, and even a wet week can leave the ground too soft for harvesting machinery. When that happens, turf can’t be cut cleanly and harvest days may need to move.
Winter brings a different challenge. Cold air settles on the river flats, and frosty mornings slow growth and can turn couch and Kikuyu a straw colour until the weather warms up in spring. Customers who want a green lawn through the cooler months are often better served by a soft leaf buffalo, which holds its colour well.
Because we grow on these flats ourselves, we keep a close eye on the forecast, let you know early if conditions could affect your order, and recommend varieties that suit the season you are laying in.
- Harvest days planned around weather and ground conditions
- Early notice if rain or flooding affects your order
- Advice on varieties that hold their winter colour
How Much Does Turf Cost from Turf Farms in the Hawkesbury?
Buying from turf farms usually works out cheaper than going through a reseller, because there is no middleman’s margin and no double handling. As a general guide, most farm-direct turf falls between about $9 and $18 per square metre, with Kikuyu and couch at the lower end and premium soft leaf buffalo toward the top. Your final price depends on the drivers below.
For exact pricing on your area and address, contact our farm team for a free, no-obligation quote.
- Variety: soft leaf buffalo costs more than Kikuyu or couch
- Order size: larger areas usually attract a lower rate per square metre
- Delivery distance: travel from our Windsor farm to your address
- Supply only or supply and lay: installation is quoted separately
Inside a Working Turf Farm: How Your Lawn Is Grown
Turf is a crop like any other, and growing a sellable lawn takes time. After each harvest, a paddock typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow a dense, well-knitted mat before it can be cut again, depending on the variety and season. Our harvesters slice each roll with a thin layer of soil and roots attached, which is why fresh turf can start taking root within a couple of weeks in warm weather.
Cut turf is still alive, but it can’t feed itself properly while it is rolled up. In hot conditions it should be laid the same day it arrives, which is why we harvest to order instead of stockpiling. For larger open spaces we also grow Maxi Turf, supplied in rolls measuring 1.2 metres by 12 metres and laid by machine for fewer joins.
How Our Turf Farm Handles Your Order, Start to Finish
Ordering from our turf farm is designed to be simple, whether you are a first-time homeowner or a landscaper booking pallets every week. You deal with the same team from the first call to the final roll, and every order follows four clear steps.
- Tell us about your area. Share your measurements, sun and shade, and how the lawn will be used, and we will recommend the right variety.
- Confirm your quote and harvest day. We lock in your pricing and schedule the cut for the day you are ready to lay.
- Fresh harvest at Windsor. Your turf is cut on our farm as close as possible to delivery or collection, so it arrives green and moist.
- Delivery, pick-up and aftercare. We deliver Monday to Saturday or have your order ready to collect, with laying and watering tips to help it root.
Getting Turf Farm Grass to Thrive in Hawkesbury Clay and Heat
Away from the river flats, many Hawkesbury and north-west yards sit on heavy clay. On new estates the topsoil is often stripped or compacted by machinery during construction, leaving a hard base that sheds water and stops young roots from going down. Laying fresh turf straight onto that surface is one of the most common reasons a new lawn browns off in its first summer.
Heat is the other big challenge. Windsor and Richmond regularly record summer days above 35°C, and turf laid on dry, unprepared soil can scorch within days. Shade from new fences and two-storey homes adds a third problem, because sun-loving grasses thin out quickly where they only get a few hours of light.
Before you order, we will talk you through loosening the base, adding a quality underlay soil and choosing a variety that suits your light. Matilda and Sir Walter thrive with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun, while Shademaster is up to 85% shade tolerant.
- Base preparation advice for clay and compacted soil
- Variety matched to the sun and shade in your yard
- Watering guidance for hot first weeks

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Turf Farm in Windsor
Thinking about buying direct from turf farms but not sure how it works? Here are clear answers to the questions Hawkesbury homeowners and landscapers ask us most.
Our turf specialists are happy to help.
Why buy from turf farms instead of a landscape supplier?
Buying from turf farms means your grass comes straight from the paddock it was grown in, with no reseller in between. At Associated Turf, we cut every order on our Windsor farm as close as possible to delivery or collection, so it hasn't been sitting on a pallet. You also get advice from the people who grow it and farm-direct pricing on every order.
Where is your turf farm located?
Our farm is on Cornwallis Road, Windsor NSW 2756, on the Cornwallis Flats beside the Hawkesbury River. Floodwaters have deposited deep, fertile soil across the flats over thousands of years, which grows dense turf with strong roots. We have farmed this land for more than 45 years.
Can I pick up turf from the farm myself?
Yes. Farm pick-up is available Monday to Friday 8am to 4.30pm and Saturday 7am to 12pm. Call ahead so we can cut your order fresh, and make sure your vehicle or trailer can safely carry the load, as fresh turf typically weighs around 15 to 25 kg per square metre depending on moisture.
How fresh is turf from turf farms compared with stockpiled turf?
We harvest to order, so your turf is cut as close as possible to delivery or collection. Stockpiled rolls can yellow and dry out within a day or two in warm weather, while freshly cut turf roots faster and stays greener. For the best result, lay your turf on the day it arrives.
Does wet weather or flooding affect turf farm harvests?
Yes. Like all turf farms on the Hawkesbury River flats, we can't harvest cleanly when paddocks are waterlogged, because the machinery would damage the rolls and the ground. If rain or rising water could affect your order, we will contact you early and agree on a new harvest day that suits you.
Which turf varieties does your farm grow?
We grow Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo, Kikuyu, Greenlees Park Couch and Wintergreen Couch. Tell us about your sunlight, foot traffic and soil and we will recommend the best fit. If you want a lawn that stays green through frosty Hawkesbury winters, soft leaf buffalo is usually the best choice.
Do turf farms sell to homeowners or only to the trade?
We supply both. Homeowners, landscapers, builders, schools and councils all order from our turf farm, and every customer gets the same fresh product, harvest-to-order service and friendly advice, whether the job is twenty square metres or two thousand.
