Getting the Grass Right Before Your Grass Turf Delivery
The most important decision in any grass turf delivery happens before the truck is loaded: which grass goes on it. A shady side path, a dog run and a sunny front lawn can each need a different variety, and the wrong pick shows up within a season as thin patches or worn tracks. Associated Turf grows six varieties on the Cornwallis Flats at Windsor, so we can match the grass to your site instead of selling whatever happens to be on hand.
Once you have chosen, we cut your grass from our own paddocks for the day you are ready and deliver it Monday to Saturday. Bigger orders come on pallets, and our own team can lay it if you would rather not.
In short: Associated Turf grows and delivers six grass varieties from its Windsor farm to homes and projects across the Hawkesbury. Prices run about $9 to $18 per square metre, with Kikuyu and couch cheaper than soft leaf buffalo, and delivery distance and laying also count. We usually reply to quote requests within one business day.

Grass Turf for Yarramundi and Pitt Town Homes
Yarramundi and Pitt Town sit on opposite sides of the district, and the lawns people want there are rarely the same. Around Yarramundi, many homes are on semi-rural blocks with mature gums, river-influenced soils and big areas of grass that need to cope with very little fuss. In Pitt Town, older rural properties sit beside newer housing, where open, sunny yards and young families put lawns under steady wear. Choosing the right grass for each of these settings is what makes a delivered lawn last.
At Associated Turf, we start with questions rather than a price list: how many hours of sun the area gets, who uses the yard and whether you want colour through winter. From there we recommend one of our six varieties, harvest it on our farm and bring it out on the day you are ready. You can read how our turf delivery service works, or call us for advice on which grass suits your block.
- Variety advice before any turf is cut
- Six grasses grown on our own Windsor paddocks
- Delivery Monday to Saturday or farm pick-up
What Your Grass Turf Delivery Can Include
Every grass on our delivery list is grown on our own river flat paddocks, so we know exactly how it performs. Here is a quick guide to the six varieties you can choose from, and the situations where each one tends to do best.
- Matilda Soft Leaf Buffalo: Australian-bred, thrives with 3 to 4 hours of direct sun
- Sir Walter Soft Leaf Buffalo: soft underfoot and happy in part shade
- Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo: up to 85% shade tolerant for heavily shaded yards
- Kikuyu: hardy, full-sun grass that repairs itself fast
- Greenlees Park Couch: premium, hard-wearing fine-leaf couch
- Wintergreen Couch: dense fine-leaf couch proven on stadiums and golf courses
Matching Grass to Sun, Shade and Frost in Pitt Town and Yarramundi
Light is the first thing we ask about. In the newer streets of Pitt Town, many backyards are fully open to the sun until a second storey or a tall boundary fence goes up, and then one side of the yard may drop to a few hours of light a day. Kikuyu and couch love full sun but thin out in that kind of shade, while Matilda and Sir Walter thrive with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun.
Around Yarramundi, mature trees create deeper, patchier shade across large parts of a block. For those areas, Shademaster is usually the safer choice because it is up to 85% shade tolerant.
Winter is the other factor. Cold air pools on low ground near the rivers, and frosty mornings can turn couch and Kikuyu a straw colour until spring. If you want the lawn to stay green through the cooler months, soft leaf buffalo holds its colour better. Telling us about your shade and frost now means the grass that turns up suits the yard it is going into.
- Full-sun yards: Kikuyu, Greenlees Park or Wintergreen
- Part shade: Matilda or Sir Walter
- Heavy shade: Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo
What Does Grass Turf Delivery Cost for Each Variety?
The grass you choose has the biggest effect on price. Bought direct from the grower, most turf comes in at about $9 to $18 per square metre. Kikuyu and couch sit toward the lower end, and soft leaf buffalo such as Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster sits toward the top. Larger areas usually earn a lower rate per square metre, delivery is based on the distance from Windsor, and laying is quoted on top according to area, preparation and access.
Tell us your area and preferred grass, and ask our farm team for a quote that compares two or three options.
- Variety: buffalo sits above Kikuyu and couch in price
- Area: bigger orders get a lower rate per square metre
- Distance: the trip from our Windsor farm to you
- Installation: supply only, or supply and lay by our team
How Each Grass Behaves Once It Arrives
Different grasses behave differently once they leave the farm, but a few rules apply to all of them. Every variety should be laid on the day it arrives, especially in hot weather, and every one needs prepared ground: loosened soil, a layer of underlay and a level finish. About two weeks is the usual time for fresh turf to start rooting in warm weather.
The varieties then go their own way. Kikuyu is quick to repair itself after wear, which suits busy, sunny yards. Greenlees Park and Wintergreen are fine-leaf couches, and Wintergreen has been proven on stadiums and golf courses. In frosty winters, couch and Kikuyu go dormant or straw-coloured, while Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster hold their colour better. Knowing this up front helps you choose a grass you will be happy with all year.
How We Match and Deliver Your Grass
Our approach puts the variety decision at the start, so the grass that arrives suits your yard for years, not just for delivery day. Here is how we take you from first question to finished lawn.
- Describe the site. Tell us about sun hours, shade, soil and who uses the lawn.
- Pick the grass. We suggest the best-fit variety, or compare two options with prices side by side.
- Harvest to order. Your chosen grass is cut from our Windsor paddocks for your delivery day.
- Deliver and settle in. We deliver Monday to Saturday and share watering tips for that variety.
Choosing a Grass That Handles Kids, Pets and Big Blocks
Many Pitt Town families want a lawn that can take daily cricket games, a trampoline and a dog that runs the same track along the fence. On those yards, hard wear matters more than anything else. Kikuyu is hardy and fast-repairing in full sun, and Greenlees Park Couch is a premium fine-leaf couch built to handle traffic, so both are worth considering where the yard gets plenty of light.
On larger Yarramundi properties, the challenge is scale. Covering big open areas with standard rolls means a lot of joins and a long day of laying. Our Maxi Turf rolls measure 1.2 metres by 12 metres and are laid by machine, which gives fewer joins and faster establishment, provided the site has easy machine access.
Where wear meets shade, such as a dog run beside the house, a soft leaf buffalo is often the better compromise. We will talk through how each part of your block is used so the grass we deliver is up to the job.
- Kikuyu or Greenlees Park for busy, sunny yards
- Maxi Turf rolls for large open acreage
- Soft leaf buffalo where wear meets shade

Frequently Asked Questions About Grass Turf Delivery in the Hawkesbury
Not sure which grass to put on the truck? These answers help Hawkesbury homeowners pick the right variety before booking.
Our turf specialists are happy to help.
How do I choose a variety for my grass turf delivery?
Start with sunlight, then think about wear and winter colour. For your grass turf delivery, we ask how many hours of direct sun the area gets, who uses the lawn and whether frost is common. With those answers, we recommend one of our six varieties so the grass suits your yard.
Which grass stays greenest through winter?
Soft leaf buffalo holds its colour better in cold weather. Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster are all good choices if you want a green lawn through frosty months. Couch and Kikuyu tend to go dormant or straw-coloured in frosty winters, then green up again as the weather warms.
What is the toughest grass you deliver?
For busy sunny yards, Kikuyu and Greenlees Park Couch are strong options. Kikuyu is hardy and repairs itself quickly after wear, while Greenlees Park is a premium hard-wearing fine-leaf couch. Wintergreen Couch is also dense and proven on stadiums and golf courses.
How much shade can soft leaf buffalo handle?
Matilda and Sir Walter thrive with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun, which suits most part-shaded yards. Shademaster is up to 85% shade tolerant, so it is our usual recommendation under trees or beside tall buildings. For any grass turf delivery to a shady spot, tell us your sun hours.
Is Kikuyu a good choice for large sunny areas?
Yes. Kikuyu is hardy, loves full sun and repairs quickly, which makes it popular for big open blocks. It also sits at the lower end of our price range. Keep in mind it can turn straw-coloured in frosty winters before recovering in the warmer months.
Can I order grass for a large paddock-style area?
Yes. Standard rolls can be delivered on pallets, and for very large open areas we also offer Maxi Turf rolls measuring 1.2 m wide by 12 m long. These are laid by machine for fewer joins and faster establishment, so the site needs easy machine access.
How quickly will my delivered grass take root?
In warm weather, fresh turf usually starts rooting within about two weeks, as long as it goes down on prepared soil the day it arrives and is watered regularly. Every grass turf delivery we send is cut to order, which gives the roots the best possible start.
