Coastal homes are some of the most rewarding lawns to finish, but they are also among the hardest to deliver to. Many beachside suburbs sit at the opposite end of Sydney from our farm, and streets near the water are often narrow, steep and lined with parked cars. Builders on these jobs usually have tight schedules, and every hour a pallet sits waiting in the sun and salt air reduces the quality of the turf.

Our approach is to plan these deliveries in detail before anything is cut. We confirm the drop point, the best time to arrive and whether a smaller truck run or split load will work better. Cronulla and the coastal south are a long way from our Windsor paddocks, so the travel time alone means every delivery needs to be planned. Once the pallets arrive, the local conditions take over. Soil near the beach is often almost pure sand, which drains quickly and holds very little moisture or nutrients. Turf laid onto that surface without underlay can dry out within hours on a warm, windy day.

Salt-laden sea breezes and strong afternoon winds add to the challenge, drying out the edges of rolls left stacked on a pallet. Many coastal homes also have tight frontages, so there may be limited room to stage the turf near the lawn.

We recommend early-morning deliveries, a good layer of underlay soil spread before the truck arrives and sprinklers ready to go. Laying should start straight away, with the turf watered thoroughly as each section goes down so it settles into the sandy base.

Once turf is cut, it is still alive but cannot feed itself properly while it is rolled up. That is why we harvest to order and never stockpile, and why every roll should be laid on the day it arrives, especially in hot weather.

Our turf is grown on the Cornwallis Flats beside the Hawkesbury River, where rich alluvial soil produces dense turf with strong roots. That strength helps it handle the trip and settle in quickly once laid. Provided it is watered regularly for the first few weeks, fresh turf usually starts rooting within about two weeks in warm weather.

A square metre of fresh turf usually weighs around 15 to 25 kg, varying with moisture. Plan for that when deciding how far rolls must be carried from the drop point.

The Northern Beaches combine long travel times with some of the trickiest access in Sydney. Many homes sit on steep escarpments, with driveways too sharp for a loaded truck and lawns several levels below the street. Others are on narrow streets close to the beach, where parking is scarce, especially on summer weekends.

Growing conditions vary across the peninsula too. Homes near the water face salty winds and sandy soil, while those on the escarpment deal with heavy shade from tall trees and run-off after heavy rain.
