What Customers Say About Our Farm-Fresh Turf
How Turf Grass Farms Grow Lawn for Sydney Suburbs
A Sydney lawn might face harbour-side shade, western heat, sandy coastal soil or clay on a hillside block. No single grass suits all of that, which is why we grow six varieties rather than one or two. Each is raised in its own paddock, mown to suit its leaf type and harvested only when it has formed a dense, well-knitted mat.
That work happens on the Cornwallis Flats at Windsor, where deep alluvial soil from the Hawkesbury River grows turf with strong roots. When a roll is lifted and trucked into the city, those roots are what help it knit into a Sydney backyard quickly.
In short: Associated Turf grows six turf varieties at Windsor and supplies homes, landscapers and builders across Sydney. Most turf costs roughly $9 to $18 per m², and the exact price turns on the variety, the area, how far we deliver and whether you need laying. We usually reply to quote requests within one business day.
- Grown and harvested on our own Windsor farm
- No resellers or stockpiled pallets in between
- Advice from growers who know every variety
- Supply for homes, landscapers, builders and councils
Turf Grass for Sydney Homes, Grown to Suit Each Yard
Sydney’s suburbs vary so much that a grass thriving in one can struggle a few kilometres away. A sunny family yard might need a tough, fast-repairing grass, while a courtyard boxed in by neighbouring homes needs one that copes with only a few hours of light. Picking the variety first, and then the supplier, gives a new lawn a far better chance. Swapping grass after a failed first attempt costs much more than choosing well the first time.
Because we grow all six of our varieties ourselves, we can explain how each one is raised and how it usually behaves once it is laid in a Sydney garden. Tell us about your sun, soil, slope and use, and we will narrow the choice down for you. We then cut your chosen grass fresh, plan delivery to your suburb and share simple preparation and watering tips. Learn more about our turf farm and how we grow.

What Our Paddocks Grow for Sydney Lawns
Every variety below is grown on our own land at Windsor and harvested only when it is mature. Here is a quick guide to where each one tends to fit best in a Sydney garden.
- Matilda Soft Leaf Buffalo: Australian-bred, happy with 3 to 4 hours of direct sun
- Sir Walter Soft Leaf Buffalo: soft leaf for part-shaded family yards
- Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo: up to 85% shade tolerant for tight courtyards
- Kikuyu: hardy, full-sun and fast to repair on large sunny blocks
- Greenlees Park Couch: premium hard-wearing fine leaf
- Wintergreen Couch: dense fine leaf proven on stadiums and golf courses
Clay Slopes and Big Blocks Across the Hills District
The Hills District is known for larger blocks, newer estates and plenty of sloping ground. Much of the area sits on heavy clay, and where building has stripped or compacted the topsoil, new turf can struggle to get its roots down. Water runs off a hard clay slope rather than soaking in, leaving the top of the yard dry and the bottom soggy.
Shade is a growing issue too. Many Hills homes are two storeys, and on narrower lots the house and fences can block much of the day’s sun. On those blocks, a buffalo such as Matilda or Sir Walter, which thrive with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun, often performs better than a sun-loving couch.
For open, sunny Hills yards, Kikuyu’s fast, hardy growth makes it a strong option. Whatever the grass, loosen the clay, add underlay soil and level the area before your turf arrives.
- Preparation advice for compacted clay slopes
- Buffalo options for two-storey shade
- Kikuyu for open, sunny blocks
How Much Does Each Turf Grass Cost for a Sydney Lawn?
Variety is one of the biggest factors in what you pay. Across our range, most farm-direct turf costs about $9 to $18 per square metre. Kikuyu and the couches sit at the lower end, and the soft leaf buffalo varieties sit toward the top. Laying is quoted on top, based on area, site preparation and access, and delivery distance from Windsor also affects Sydney orders.
To compare varieties for your yard, ask us for a quote on two or three options.
- Variety: buffalo costs more than Kikuyu or couch
- Area: larger lawns get a lower rate per m²
- Delivery distance: how far your suburb is from Windsor
- Supply only or supply and lay: installation is priced separately
How Farm-Grown Turf Settles Into a Sydney Yard
Every roll leaves our farm with leaf, runners, roots and a thin layer of the river soil it grew in. That is what lets fresh turf start rooting within about two weeks in warm weather, once it is laid on prepared ground and watered regularly for the first few weeks.
Because rolled turf can’t feed itself properly, it should be laid the day it arrives, especially in hot weather. We cut to order and never stockpile, so the grass hasn’t been waiting in a yard before the trip into the city. Back on the farm, a harvested paddock typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow before it can be cut again, so we rotate paddocks to keep each variety available.
How We Grow, Harvest and Deliver for Sydney Orders
Each Sydney order moves from a mature paddock to your yard in four steps. The aim is simple: the right grass, cut fresh, arriving when you are ready to lay.
- Choose the variety. We help you pick the grass that suits your suburb, light and use.
- Select the paddock. We cut from a mature paddock of that variety with a dense, well-rooted mat.
- Harvest for the run. Your rolls are cut at Windsor and stacked on pallets for the trip into Sydney.
- Deliver Monday to Saturday. Pallets are dropped as close to your site as access allows.
Small Yards and Tight Access in St George and Kogarah
St George and Kogarah are established suburbs where many homes sit on modest blocks, with backyards hemmed in by fences, granny flats and neighbouring houses. That often means limited sun, so a shade-tolerant buffalo is usually a better fit than couch or Kikuyu. Shademaster is up to 85% shade tolerant, and Matilda and Sir Walter thrive with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun.
Access is the other common challenge. Narrow streets, street parking and rear yards reached only through a side gate can make delivery and laying slower. Let us know what access looks like when you order, so we can plan the drop-off and quote laying fairly.
Older yards here may also have tired, compacted soil from years of use. Before laying, loosen the ground, add underlay soil and level it. Smaller lawns are easy to water well, so keep the new turf moist for the first few weeks.
- Shade-tolerant buffalo for enclosed yards
- Delivery planned around side-gate access

Frequently Asked Questions About Turf Grass Farms for Sydney Lawns
These answers explain how our varieties are grown and which ones tend to suit different Sydney yards.
Our turf specialists are happy to help.
What do the turf grass farms Sydney landscapers buy from actually grow?
Turf grass farms Sydney landscapers use grow buffalo, Kikuyu and couch varieties for different conditions. At Associated Turf in Windsor, we grow Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo, Kikuyu, Greenlees Park Couch and Wintergreen Couch, each in its own paddock and harvested fresh to order.
Which variety suits a shady Sydney courtyard?
Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo is up to 85% shade tolerant, making it a strong choice for enclosed courtyards. Matilda and Sir Walter also cope well, thriving with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun.
Which grass is best for a big, sunny block?
Kikuyu is hardy, full-sun and quick to repair itself, which suits large open yards. For a finer look that still handles wear, Greenlees Park Couch is a premium hard-wearing option.
How do turf grass farms keep varieties available all year?
A harvested paddock typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow, so growers rotate harvests between paddocks. That way there is usually mature turf of each variety ready, though weather can affect harvest days.
Will my lawn stay green in a Sydney winter?
Couch and Kikuyu can go dormant or straw-coloured in frosty winters, particularly in colder western suburbs. Soft leaf buffalo holds its colour better, so it is a good choice if winter colour matters to you.
How long does new turf take to root?
The roots of fresh turf usually start to grow down within about two weeks in warm weather. Lay it on well-prepared soil on the day it arrives and water regularly for the first few weeks.
How do I choose a variety before deciding?
Describe your yard's sun, soil and use over the phone on 1800 044 006 and we will suggest a variety. Orders can be delivered across the city or collected from our Windsor farm, Monday to Friday 8am to 4.30pm or Saturday 7am to 12pm.
