What Customers Say About Our Farm-Fresh Turf
What Happens on Turf Grass Farms Before Your Lawn Arrives
Most people only see turf once it is rolled up on a pallet, but each square metre has spent many months in the ground first. On turf grass farms, the grass is grown much like any other crop. Paddocks are prepared, the grass spreads into a dense mat, it is mown and fed regularly, and only then is it ready to cut.
At Associated Turf, that work happens on the Cornwallis Flats at Windsor, where the Hawkesbury River has laid down rich alluvial soil. That soil helps the grass build a thick, well-knitted mat with strong roots, which is exactly what you want when the roll is lifted and moved to your yard.
In short: Associated Turf grows turf grass on its own Windsor paddocks for homes, landscapers and councils across the Hawkesbury. Most turf costs around $9 to $18 per m², driven by variety, area, delivery distance and whether you want it laid. We usually reply to quote requests within one business day.

Trusted Turf Grass Growers for Richmond and Kurrajong
Richmond homes sit on a mix of river-influenced flats and higher, drier ground, and lawns there have to handle long hot summers and cold winter mornings. Up the hill in Kurrajong, blocks are often sloping, partly shaded by established trees and a little cooler than the valley floor. Those two settings ask very different things of a lawn, and that is why knowing how a grass was grown matters before you buy it.
Because we grow every variety ourselves, we can explain how each one has been raised and how it is likely to behave on your block. A Richmond yard in full sun might suit Kikuyu, while a leafy Kurrajong garden may need a shade-tolerant buffalo. We cut your chosen grass fresh, deliver Monday to Saturday or have it ready to collect, and share preparation and watering tips. - Sir Walter Soft Leaf Buffalo: soft underfoot and comfortable in part shade
- Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo: up to 85% shade tolerant

How Seasons and Regrowth Shape What We Can Harvest
A harvested paddock isn’t ready again next month. After a cut, it typically needs around 10 to 18 months to regrow a dense, well-knitted mat that can be lifted cleanly. That cycle means turf grass farms have to plan harvests carefully, rotating between paddocks so there is always mature grass ready for the next order.
The seasons also play a big part. In warm months the grass grows quickly and recovers fast. In the cooler months, couch and Kikuyu slow right down and can go dormant or straw-coloured after frosts, while soft leaf buffalo holds its colour better. A Richmond customer laying in July will often get a greener result from buffalo than from couch.
Wet weather adds a third factor. Harvest machinery needs firm ground to cut even rolls, so very wet paddocks can delay a cutting day. Cutting soft ground would tear the rolls and damage the paddock for the next crop. We keep you posted if that happens.
- Paddocks rotated so mature turf is ready
- Variety advice to suit the season you lay in
- Early notice if wet ground delays harvest
How Much Does Turf Cost Straight From Our Grass Farm?
Because we grow, cut and deliver everything ourselves, you pay a farm-direct price rather than a reseller’s. As a general guide, most of our turf sits between about $9 and $18 per square metre. Kikuyu and couch are at the lower end, and soft leaf buffalo is near the top. Laying or installation is quoted on top, based on area, site preparation and access.
To get exact figures for your Richmond or Kurrajong address, contact the farm team with your area.
- Variety: buffalo costs more to buy than Kikuyu or couch
- Area: larger orders attract a lower rate per m²
- Delivery distance: travel from Windsor to your property
- Site access and preparation: affects the cost of laying
What a Freshly Harvested Roll Is Made Of
When a roll is cut on our farm, the harvester slices under the grass so each piece carries leaf, runners, roots and a thin layer of the Hawkesbury soil it grew in. That attached soil and root system is what lets fresh turf start rooting within about two weeks in warm weather.
Once cut, the grass is still alive but can’t feed itself properly while rolled up, so it should be laid on the day it arrives, especially in hot weather. That is why we cut to order and never stockpile. A fresh roll typically weighs around 15 to 25 kg per square metre, depending on moisture. For ovals, parks and acreage, we also harvest Maxi Turf rolls measuring 1.2 metres wide by 12 metres long.
How We Grow, Cut and Send Out Your Turf
Your order joins a growing cycle that has already been running for many months. Once you confirm, we take it through four stages, from the paddock to your property.
- Match the paddock. We pick a mature paddock of your chosen variety that is ready to lift cleanly.
- Schedule the cut. We set the harvest for the day you plan to lay, allowing for weather and ground conditions.
- Harvest and load. The rolls are cut with soil and roots attached and stacked onto pallets.
- Deliver or collect. We deliver Monday to Saturday, or you collect from our Windsor gate during farm hours.
Getting Farm-Grown Turf to Take on Kurrajong Hillsides
Kurrajong properties bring challenges that valley yards rarely face. Sloping ground lets water run off before it soaks in, so new turf on a hillside can dry out quickly at the top of the slope while the bottom stays soggy. Tall established trees, common in the area, cast heavy shade and compete with young grass for moisture.
Soil can also vary a lot from block to block on the hills, and some yards have thin or compacted topsoil that needs work before laying. Good preparation matters here: loosen the compacted ground, add an underlay soil and level it as well as the slope allows, so the roots can reach down quickly.
Variety choice is the other half of the answer. Even with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun, Matilda and Sir Walter thrive, and Shademaster copes with up to 85% shade. Water regularly for the first few weeks, paying extra attention to the higher parts of the slope.

Frequently Asked Questions About Turf Grass Farms Near Richmond
Curious about how turf is grown before it reaches your yard? These answers cover the growing and harvesting questions we hear most from Richmond and Kurrajong customers.
Our turf specialists are happy to help.
How do turf grass farms grow lawn?
Turf grass farms grow grass as a crop in prepared paddocks, mowing and feeding it until it forms a dense, well-knitted mat. At Associated Turf in Windsor, that happens in rich Hawkesbury river soil. Once mature, the grass is cut into rolls with soil and roots attached and sent straight to customers.
How long does a paddock take to regrow after harvest?
Each harvested paddock typically takes around 10 to 18 months to regrow before the next cut. The time depends on the variety and the season, which is why we rotate harvests between paddocks to keep mature turf available.
Why does the soil a turf is grown in matter?
The soil supports the grass while it builds its roots and runners. Our Cornwallis Flats paddocks have deep alluvial soil laid down by the Hawkesbury River, which grows dense turf with strong roots that hold together well when lifted.
Do turf grass farms harvest in wet weather?
Not when the ground is waterlogged. Harvest machinery needs firm paddocks to cut clean, even rolls, so heavy rain can delay a cutting day. We let you know early if the weather may affect your order and agree on a new date.
Which varieties do you grow on your farm?
The range we grow covers Kikuyu, Greenlees Park Couch, Wintergreen Couch and Matilda, Sir Walter and Shademaster Soft Leaf Buffalo. Each has its own paddocks and suits different conditions, from deep shade to full sun and heavy wear.
Is turf from turf grass farms fresher than stockpiled rolls?
Yes, when it is cut to order. Turf can't feed itself properly while rolled, so it starts to deteriorate soon after harvest. We cut as close as possible to when you need it, and recommend laying it the day it arrives, especially in hot weather.
How soon will my new turf take root?
You can expect fresh turf to begin rooting within about two weeks in warm weather. Prepare your soil well beforehand and water regularly for the first few weeks to help the roots grow down into your yard.
