Medium-density living has changed the shape of lawns around Parramatta and Westmead. Many yards are now narrow strips between buildings, which means less direct sun and more reflected heat from walls and paving. Sun-hungry grasses thin out quickly in these spots. Shademaster can tolerate up to 85% shade, while Matilda and Sir Walter will still thrive with as little as 3 to 4 hours of direct sun.

Access is the next hurdle. Townhouse developments often have shared driveways and limited parking, so a delivery needs a clear unloading plan and a team ready to carry turf in by hand. Fresh turf typically weighs around 15 to 25 kg per square metre, so a well-organised crew makes a big difference.

Finally, small lawns show every flaw. Uneven levels and wide joins are obvious in a compact courtyard. We prepare and level carefully so the finished lawn sits neatly against paths and edges.

Turf is alive when it is cut, but once rolled it cannot feed itself properly. Fresh turf is best laid on arrival day, and this matters most in hot weather. That is why we cut to order and never stockpile, and why we line up harvest, delivery and installation as closely as possible for Sydney customers.

Our turf grows in rich alluvial soil on the Cornwallis Flats beside the Hawkesbury River, which produces dense turf with strong roots. Laid promptly on prepared ground, fresh turf usually starts rooting within about two weeks in warm weather.

Delivery runs Monday to Saturday, with pallets used for bigger jobs. New turf then needs regular watering for the first few weeks.

Austral and the newer pockets around Liverpool are home to large estates where land has been cleared, cut and filled before houses go up. Topsoil is often stripped or buried, leaving compacted ground that sheds water and resists roots. Turf laid directly on that surface tends to struggle through its first summer.

Heat is the second issue. South-west Sydney summers can be hot and dry, and newly laid turf on bare, unprepared ground can scorch quickly. Laying on the day of delivery and watering regularly for the first few weeks are essential.

Sun exposure on new estates is often high, because trees have not yet grown. Hardy, full-sun Kikuyu repairs quickly, and couch is hard-wearing, though both go dormant or straw-coloured in frosty winters. Soft leaf buffalo holds its colour better.
